These Vintage Christmas Recipes Are Worth Trying This Year

We all have some family recipes that were passed on to our moms from the previous generation. However, there are some vintage recipes that most people don’t make anymore. Why not bring back those superb vintage recipes for Christmas? Here are five of them that you can easily try.

Shrimp Cocktail

Many haven’t even heard of this holiday dinner recipe. Well, it’s not exactly what it sounds like; it doesn’t include a real cocktail. The cocktail sauce is made with Tabasco sauce, horseradish, chopped celery, lemon juice, chili sauce, and Worcestershire sauce.

Mix the ingredients and refrigerate. Then, to make the shrimp cocktail, arrange cooked shrimp in cocktail glasses and use the refrigerated cocktail sauce as a topping. You could garnish with watercress and serve.

Christmas Bells

This is one of those cookies that will make your guests beg for some takeaway. To make Christmas bells, you’ll need an egg, ½ cup sugar, one teaspoon vanilla, ½ tsp salt, ¼ tsp soda, ½ cup shortening(part margarine or butter), and 1½ cups flour.

Mix shortening, egg, vanilla, and sugar in a bowl. Then, stir salt, flour, and soda, then blend in. Color ⅔ of the dough red and mold into ten by 1½ in. roll. Mold the roll into a ball shape, roll out the remaining dough, and cover the colored roll. Cut into ⅛” thick slices, press a tiny ball of dough at the bottom(for clapper), and bake for 10 minutes.

Old-fashioned Sour Cream Cookies

These vintage cookies are exceptionally good- just a taste, and you’ll be nodding in agreement. You’ll need ingredients like an egg, 1 cup sugar, ½ cup sour cream, ½ cup shortening, ½ teaspoon salt, ½ tsp soda, 2⅔ cups flour, one teaspoon vanilla, one tablespoon baking powder, and ¼ teaspoon nutmeg.

Mix the dry ingredients first and gradually blend in the wet ingredients. Roll out your dough to ¼” thick on a floured pastry cloth. Then cut with a 2″ cutter, place on a greased baking sheet, and sprinkle with sugar. Bake for 10 minutes or until they are slightly browned.

Butter Rich Spritz

Of course, you know spritz- but not this one, we can assure you of that. To make this butter-rich spritz, stir 2½ cups of all-purpose flour in a bowl with ½ teaspoon of salt. Gradually blend in 1 cup of butter, 1½ cups of sifted sugar, one teaspoon of vanilla, and one whole egg.

Then, press a small amount of dough through a cookie press onto baking sheets; you can make any shape you like with any plate. For about 8 minutes, bake at 400°. You might want to decorate with dried fruit.

Especially if there are many kids around, these vintage gingerbread boys will surely be crowd-pleasers. You’ll need one teaspoon of allspice, cinnamon, salt, ginger, and cloves.
