Natural textures became fashionable
Hair is an integral part of African-American people’s identity. For a long time, and even today to some extent, they were forced to straighten and hide their natural hair textures, but this shot of actor Pam Grier showed they were front and center in the 1970s.
The fact that she was comfortable enough to embrace her natural hair inspired many black women to follow suit, and even fashion magazines began featuring these styles on their pages. The afro also became a staple in the disco-dominated nightclub scene.
