Retro Chic: These 1950s Fashion Trends Are Now Back In Our Wardrobes

The 1950s was an outstanding era when it came to fashion; it was a decade of elevated style. Although we often recreate the fashion styles of the later decades because we feel comfortable in the baggy clothing they majored in, the 1950s has caught our attention with its glamorous pieces. This article is about the 50s fashion trends and how they’re making comebacks.

Jackets with skirts

One of the more corporate styles that emerged in the 1950s was A-line pencil skirts paired with peplum jackets. These skirts were usually full and figure-flattering; well, these skirts have found their way into our style today.

Thanks to Dior, Chanel, and other haute couture designers, many 1950s suit skirts have been recreated with a modern, tight fit. To rock these in a modern way today, pair them with blazers that flare out just above the hips.

Large brimmed hats

Aside from the glamorous dresses and heels, another prominent feature of 1950s clothing style was large-brimmed hats. These large hats were often adorned with feathers, ribbons, or beads; they were an evening wear staple.

Today, these large-brimmed hats are back- from the beach to corporate-casual events. Instead of the former woolen hats, they are now made out of straw with border prints.

Shirt dresses

In the 1950s, it was the norm for women to dress up for even the most casual occasions. Shirt dresses were a popular fashion choice as they made women look classy and sophisticated without much effort. How are they worn today?

With feminine details like cotton belts, button-down closures, and bright colors, ladies now rock shirt dresses for different occasions. You could pair your shirt dress with sneakers for a chic look or with cowboy boots for a country look.

Matching colors

When it comes to 1950s fashion trends, colors played a major part in defining them. The women often incorporated matching colors as much as possible; think of navy blue tops over trousers of the same color or dresses and shoes of the same color.

There are lots of two-piece clothes in matching colors today. However, the key to rocking this style is adding accessories with color or designs that stand out. You could wear dark green joggers and sweatshirts, then pair them with an animal-printed purse.

Kitten heels and oxford shoes

While different footwear trends were popularized in the 1950s, oxford shoes and kitten heels are the two footwear types that are back in this decade. We’re not surprised because these shoes aren’t just nice, they are practical.

Paired with trousers and a frilly blouse, oxford shoes create a clean and chic look. In the same vein, kitten heels take your outfit from zero to a hundred. You could wear them with high-waisted jeans and a T-shirt- then complete the look with a cardigan over your shoulders.
