Who remembers when McDonald’s playland looked like this? Oh! Memories… But here is the reason why we do not see PlayPlaces in McDonald’s anymore. McDonald’s foray into restaurant-adjacent playgrounds peaked in the 1990s. Their history is rich, and there are possible explanations for why their numbers are dwindling.
First of all, safety concerns. These outdoor playgrounds were not without flaws, as the US Consumer Product Safety Commission discovered that McDonald’s had failed to report numerous injuries. Secondly, iPads have taken all kids’ attention and have harmed PlayPlaces in a more direct and long-term way.
